Author: John Fleischman

Genre:  Non-fiction                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               In 1848, a man named Phineas Gage had a horrible accident while working on the railroad. His job as a foreman was to work with explosives that gave him a terrible accident that left a hole in his head and changed his life. Despite the horrible accident, Gage made a “complete recovery” and was able to tell his story. He traveled around the world and was able to get three jobs when he got fired from his railroad job. His case changed the way doctors and scientists thought about the brain and it made a huge difference.

Was Phineas lucky or unlucky? I think he was lucky. He was lucky because even though his accident was terrible he lived to tell his story. Also he did recover from it and was able to live a close to normal life. Despite the fact that he got fired from his railroad job, he was able to find other jobs. Even though eventually he died, Gage was able to live another 11 adventurous years.

There are many things I liked and didn’t like about this story. The beginning I thought was fantastic! I really liked how they explained what Phineas‘s  job was. I didn’t really like that they explained a lot about what his brain looked like. I liked how they explained more about what Phineas did after his surgery. I thought that his new jobs were amazing! As the rest of the story went on I got a little lost. I hated reading about all the brain scans and all the other brain things. I would rate this book 2 stars. I would recommend this book to doctors and kids who want to be doctors.
